There are many reasons why dogs lick, it is their why of expressing them self's. When we take on a puppy we become part of a pack and we should make sure we are the pack leader. There are many theories about dog licking and it's a very interesting subject. It dose not matter what breed or sex the dog is, licking can be a submissive social signal and can be used as a submissive signal to a more dominant pack member, other words us. It starts when your dog is a puppy, it licks around its mohters face to solicit solid food from her when they are weaned, licking to request its dinner. Also dogs lick as a substitute for puppy mouthing behaviour, that's the reason why we train puppies not to put their teeth on people so they lick to occupy their mouths. Licking is also a sign of affection, showing its owner that it enjoys being with you, cuddling up next to you on your sofa .
Licking is a gesture an instinct that gose back to the wolf. When the mother wolf returns from a hunt her pups will lick her face to stimulate her to regurgitate food for them, this helps the puppies to wean from her milk to solids. There are a lot of owners that don't relies that when they come home from work, its just like the mother wolf coming back from a hunt, so when your dog gives you a kiss, it could actually mean that they are asking you to reguraitate some food, nice.
Dogs don't only lick our faces but also lick to clean themselves or their puppies or as a social behaviour between each other. But I have seen my dog lick my walls, its toys and many other things. When dogs go exploring they lick things to find out information about their surroundings. |
